Theme for 2007 ~ 2008:
A Peaceful Heart in a Stormy World
"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let yourt heart be troubled,
nor let it be fearful." John 14:27
Lightening flashes, thunder rolls, and storm clouds obscure the horizon.
Sure, there are days when the sun shines and we enjoy the gentle breezes of life, but as the old saying goes, “into every life a little rain must fall.” As we follow Christ, there are days when that “little rain” seems more like a tornado—the kind of storm that blows the roof off of our house and scatters the treasured pieces of our lives across the landscape. What do we do then?
Is it possible to have peace in such circumstances…when things don’t go anywhere near the way that we hoped or planned? When tragedy strikes? When we are standing knee-deep in rubble? Can we have peace?
Jesus says yes. Our theme for Women’s Ministries 2007-2008 is A Peaceful Heart in a Stormy World. The verse for this year is John 14:27. In this treasured scripture, our Lord promises to leave us peace and to give us His peace. This is not a peace that we try to muster up with our own strength, but peace that Christ gives us as a gift. It is unlike anything the world can offer us or counterfeit. Jesus commands us to not let our hearts be troubled nor fearful. This tells us that we can either “let” our hearts be fearful or “let” them bathe in the peace of Christ. We have a choice to make.
Please note Jesus did not say the words of John 14:27 on what we would consider a sunny day. He said them at the very time Judas was heading to the chief priests and the Pharisees to betray Him and just a short time before going to the Garden of Gethsemane to be arrested. Crucifixion, the scattering of the disciples, and the persecution of the church loomed on the horizon.
The peace Jesus offered to the disciples and offers to us is not based on our circumstances. It is not necessarily deliverance from the storm but the presence of Christ with us as the rain pours and the lightening strikes. It is a peace that comes from the saving power of Christ in our lives, the abiding truth of His Word in our hearts, and the trust we have that God truly does do all things well.
Peace in the storms of life is truly possible when we fix our eyes on Jesus. As we begin this year of Women’s Bible Study, let us do just that. Let us fix our eyes not on the storms of life or the fear of storms to come, but let us accept from Jesus the true peace that only He can provide. “My peace I give to you.”
